Honor the Process

John Maxwell

I attended multiple leadership conferences with Dr. John Maxwell. I watched him go from an unknown local church pastor to a world-renowned speaker and author. He said, “Everyone wants to be where I am, but very few are willing to do what I did to get here.” His implication was powerful.

I had witnessed his process, not just his success, so I knew exactly what he was saying.

Long before John Maxwell was an authority on leadership, he was an unknown leadership junky. In addition to serving the churches he pastored, he tirelessly researched to learn all he could about leadership. He believed everything rises and falls on leadership years before he wrote his book about it. He used to carry boxes full of notes, some even on napkins, he had collected on leadership. He implemented a work ethic, love for people, and an unquenchable thirst for God.

I remember the day he prayed over Shelly and me while standing in the middle of a road on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina. It was a great honor.

This was before he became recognized as an authority on leadership.

In the same way, long before I began to give with audacious generosity, God took me through a process of experiencing and receiving His courage and freedom. It was a life-changing process, but the point is that it was a process.

This doesn’t mean the process will take you as long as it took me. I didn’t have anyone pointing out to me God’s strategy of audacious generosity and His process of courage and freedom in order to get there.

The moment we start talking about audacious generosity, everyone wants some.

Given the choice, every one of us wants to be more generous, but fear holds us back.

Audacious generosity is the by-product of courage and freedom.

Courage results in freedom. Freedom results in audacious generosity.
